Overview of Resource Analytics

OCI Resource Analytics is an inventory of OCI resources, their relationships, and configuration metadata.

You can access near-real-time, detailed information on monitored resources with SQL queries, graph-based visualizations, and analytics dashboards. Resource Analytics provisions Autonomous Data Warehouse (ADW) and, optionally, an Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) instance in your tenancy, letting you import datasets and dashboards to track the inventory, monitor compliance, and troubleshoot. The ADW maintains a best-practice relational model of OCI resources, including a property graph that lets you analyze resources and their associations in Graph Studio, and continuously ingests resource updates across the regions and tenancies you specify.
Important

Resource Analytics requires an ADW instance, and optionally an OAC instance. Although the resource updates provided by Resource Analytics are free, use of ADW (and OAC) is chargeable.
Altogether, you have:
Direct SQL connections
All the existing interfaces for connecting to an Autonomous Data Warehouse are available.
Built-in analytics
An optional preconfigured Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) instance with a semantic model, along with prebuilt dashboards and reports.
Third-party data integration
You can bring custom datasets by importing the data into a separate schema in ADW. Then, you can merge these custom datasets with Resource Analytics datasets for enriched insights.
Visualization
Intuitive graph visualization enabled through Graph Studio with preconfigured maps and notebooks to explore resources and their interdependencies.

About the Resource Analytics Console

The Resource Analytics Console has several functions.

The functions are:

  • Setting up a Resource Analytics instance.
  • Changing existing Resource Analytics instances (such as regional or tenancy coverage).
  • Listing existing Resource Analytics instances.
  • Choosing to change Resource Analytics feature selection (for example, adding OAC).
  • Removing an Resource Analytics instance or optional components.
    Note

The removal of a Resource Analytics instance doesn't delete the Oracle ADW instance or the data contained within it, nor is any OAC removed. But, the remaining data becomes stale as the update feeds are removed. To remove the ADW or optional OAC instance, follow instructions provided in the appropriate Console management applications for these services.

The Resource Analytics Console can be found by navigating within the Console menu to the section entitled Observability & Management. From the list of services, select Resource Analytics to take you to the main landing page for the service. From here you can either create a new instance or view any instances created earlier.

Bring Your Own License (BYOL)

Resource Analytics is powered by Oracle Database Enterprise Edition, and optionally Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC). These tools are provisioned and tuned for use with Resource Analytics as part of the Resource Analytics provisioning process. However, you may select a BYOL option for both the database and OAC to bring your existing software licenses to the cloud service, if they're available. Note that Resource Analytics requires Oracle Database Enterprise Edition.

To use BYOL, select this option while completing the Resource Analytics create instance form.

Oracle Database

Resource Analytics is powered by Oracle's Autonomous Data Warehouse and defaults to version 23ai (if this version is available in the realm or region you're deploying in). If version 23ai isn't available, version 19c is provisioned instead. Details on the database and version provisioned can be found in the Oracle Database Console application.

You need to provide some basic information to let Resource Analytics provision the required ADW instance: the network to be used (VNC and subnet), and either an administrator password or details of an appropriate secret contained within your OCI vault.
Note

The standard configuration uses 4 ECPUs and 1 TB of storage and is set to scale automatically.
If a text-based password is supplied, the username can't be changed, but you're free to enter any valid ADW password. (The specification for this password is 12 to 30 characters, containing at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one numeric value. Spaces aren't allowed.)
Note

Any password provided isn't stored by Resource Analytics.
You're free to change the password in the ADW service Console when ADW has completed provisioning.

Starting and Stopping the ADW: Implications for Resource Analytics

ADW is a critical component of the Resource Analytics instance. Stopping or disabling the database has direct implications on the functionality and data freshness of your Resource Analytics setup.

What Happens When the Autonomous Database is Stopped?

  • Live updates are paused
The Resource Analytics instance stops receiving real-time updates related to resource changes.
The instance state changes to Needs Attention
This indicates that user action is needed.

How to Recover

Re-enable or re-start the ADW instance to resolve the issue. When it's active, the Resource Analytics pipeline resumes processing updates within an hour.
Note

Consider the following:
Backfill delay
On ADW restart, the processing and ingesting any accumulated (pending) data events - a process known as backfill - might take extra time to complete. As a result, you might experience delays in data refresh and availability within the system.
Impact of extended downtime
If the ADW instance remains shut down for an extended period, the duration required to backfill pending events increases proportionally.
Automatic ingestion suspension
If the ADW instance is offline for more than 21 consecutive days, automatic data ingestion is permanently disabled for the associated Resource Analytics instance. At this point:
  • The affected Resource Analytics is marked as obsolete.
  • The only solution available is to delete the obsolete Resource Analytics instance and create a new one.
Plan the maintenance activities to minimize data pipeline disruption and ensure continued service availability.

Oracle Analytics Cloud

Oracle Analytics Cloud (OAC) is a popular tool for visualizing Oracle database data. Resource Analytics provides sample dashboards for Resource Analytics data that can be accessed in an OAC instance. To use OAC as part of your Resource Analytics, select the box to provision a new instance with the sample dashboards included automatically.

After you have decided to provision OAC, two further options must be considered:

  • Bring Your Own License (BYOL)

If your organization already owns licenses for OAC it's possible to allocate one of those for use with Resource Analytics. Select the BYOL option when creating your instance or when adding OAC to an existing instance.

  • Choice of Network Configuration

By default you're assigned a public endpoint through which to access the OAC instance. To configure OAC for a Private Endpoint, select the relevant option on the create form. For more information, see: Do You Need a Public or Private Endpoint?.

    Note

The endpoint type for OAC can't be changed after it's selected.
For information on using Resource Analytics with OAC, see Using OAC with Resource Analytics.
